The Sutton Sting continued their raise up the ranks on Sunday night by gaining their first promotion. A dramatic night in the NIC saw the Sting take their 3 goal advantage in to the second leg across the Nottingham Lions. Over a thousand fans were in attendance to see a 4 – 4 tie on the night and that was enough to seal the promotion for the Sting.
It is a promotion that is the biggest achievement for the club in their short history. The Sting are based in the town of Sutton in Ashfield near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. However the Sting play all their home games at the Ice Sheffield due to the ice surface at the Lammas Leisure Centre being too small.
The Sutton Sting have won plaudits not only winning this promotion but for their commitment to the youth set up. Since being founded by a group of players from Sheffield seeking more ice time the Sting have had the philosophy to let the kids play and enjoy themselves. This philosophy led the Sting to enter the EIHA in 2006 and enter youth teams into competitions. This has been so successful that the Sting organisation with the help of parents and volunteers now enter two youth teams at under 10, 12, 14 and 16’s.
The Sting’s ethic also led to an adult team being entered into the English National League and all the hard work has now paid off with a promotion to Division one. Next season will be a whole new challenge as the Stings adult team will take on the big guns of the National League in Billingham, Solway and Whitley Bay.
