Team GB’s hopes of hosting the Olympic pre qualification tournament have been dashed. Great Britain along with Romania and Korea will now head to Japan to play to the tournament.
Great Britain had hoped to host the event and as the top seed in the group did have the first chance to host the event. However a lack of ice time at a suitable arena and a lack of funding for the event seem to have scuppered any hopes.
Instead the 3 day tournament will take place in Japan in November. It is a major blow for Team GB who will be harbouring ambitions of progressing to the next stage of qualification and would have cherished the chance to play in front of a partisan crowd. Although it will be a major boost for Japan who missed the 2011 World Championships after the earthquake and tsunami that struck in an area where ice hockey was very popular.
